I Simposio Ibérico del Bambú + Taller UPM
Instituto Eduardo Torroja, Madrid, October 2019
1st Iberian Bamboo Symposium
From 1 to 3 October 2019, we organised, together with INBAR the first Iberian Bamboo Symposium + Bamboo Construction Workshop, with the aim of communicating the benefits of bamboo and its contributions in various areas that help meet sustainable development goals and the Paris Agreement to a wide range of European stakeholders, encouraging new partnerships, programmes and research on bamboo applications in European markets. Participants and speakers come from a wide range of sectors in European countries and bamboo-producing countries, including international experts, policy makers and representatives of the private sector.
"How can Europe benefit from bamboo? Historically associated with countries located in the tropics and subtropics, this fast-growing plant, known by some as "vegetable steel", can be integrated into lifestyles in the Global North in a variety of ways: as a new source of renewable energy, as a low-carbon material, as a replacement for single-use plastics, but also for use in sustainable construction, potentially becoming a crucial part of a circular economy. By developing the market for bamboo products and collaborating more closely with bamboo-producing countries, Europe can find in this plant a new natural contribution to sustainable development."
Bamboo Construction Workshop
Universidad Politécnica de Madrid UPM, Octubre 2019
The workshop is organised by the Department of Construction and Architectural Technologies at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, thanks to the participation and sponsorship of BAMBUSA ESTUDIO.
For this edition, we also have the collaboration of INBAR and his management team.
The aim is to introduce bamboo as a potential building material, including a theoretical section to gain in-depth knowledge of the material and a practical workshop consisting of the installation of a bamboo greenhouse.

Practical workshop on green building with bamboo
Alg_a Lab Vigo, Feb 2018
Construction of a structure for heavy loads using Guadua bamboo canes, consisting of two inverted trusses and pillars to support a green roof in the spaces of Alg_a Lab.
Together with the students, we practised the construction system using a template on the ground, threaded rod joints, fish mouth joints, cement filling and structure placement, for future covering with soil and plants. The roof battens are made from Nigra bamboo cane sourced from this area.
Course held as part of the IV Course on Bioconstruction at the Valladares neighbourhood centre (Vigo), coordinated by Alex Fernandez of Tecnoloxías Apropiadas Natural Materials and Construction Systems module.

Bamboo eco-construction workshop
Monforte de Lemos (Lugo), 2017
As part of the IV Conference organised by ESPIGA, – Galician Association for Bioconstruction – we participated with a talk where we were able to showcase the characteristics of Guadua, including the processes it undergoes before arriving in Spain, a life cycle analysis of the material, and the ecological footprint of its processing and transport.
We were also able to discuss the current status of specific regulations for bamboo and, based on our experience and that of international specialists, show constructive examples with different solutions and possibilities.
We concluded the presentation on Guadua with a workshop on making bamboo joints, where we made fish mouths, T-type joints and a fish truss (+ examples of connections)

Theoretical and practical workshop on building with bamboo
CDICV, Valencia 2014
We began 2012 with this workshop organised by the Association of Interior Designers of the Valencian Community in the Grao de Valencia warehouses.
The idea was, on the one hand, to raise awareness of the properties and current uses of this great material and, on the other, to practise building small, regular structures in which the possibilities of bamboo as a construction material could be clearly seen.
Using Moso slats and 4 and 8 cm Moso bamboo canes, we demonstrate the method for constructing a "fish truss", forming a hyperbolic paraboloid and two types of hyperboloid-shaped columns in which we can easily modify the curvature and height to obtain different results... It almost takes longer to name the structures than to build them.
